17 Feb 2012 | First coordination meeting of "Fascination of Plants Day"–China held in Shanghai
The 1st meeting for the coordination of Fascination of Plants Day (FoPD) in China, hosted by the Chinese Society of Plant Biology (CSPB), was successfully held in Shanghai on February11, 2012. Fourteen delegates from eight institutions, including research institutes, botanical gardens and associations, participated and discussed the issues related to the organization of FoPD in China. The first “Fascination of Plants Day” in China will be launched under the CSPB coordination and co-organized by five botanical gardens that include Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, Wuhan Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xiang Shan Beijing Botanical Garden and South China Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences. During the FoPD, all the gardens will be organized various activities to show how the importance of plants to our society, for example, plant-related seminars, plant exhibition, TV shows, and so on. To encourage teenagers learning more about plants, a prize competition for plant-related articles will be organized in Shanghai by Shanghai Society for Plant Biology. Each botanical garden will also have their detailed programs for FoPD before March 1. It is time for China to take action!

08 Feb 2012 | Welcome to Brazil, the 33rd country joining the "Fascination of Plants Day"
Brazilien scientists confirmed to join the FoPD: ‘My colleague António Costa de Oliveira, Professor at UF Pelotas, Brazil, will coordinate the FoPD in Brazil’ Nelson Saibo, the Portugese FoPD coordinator, told Karin Metzlaff from EPSO. Already in 2011, Ricardo Enrique Bressan-Smith, Associate Professor at North Fluminense State University and President of the Brazilian Society of Plant Physiology, told Karin he ‘contacted the Botanical Society of Brazil (SBB)’, being connected to ‘most of the botanical gardens, plant nurseries, museums etc in my country’. This follows the invitation of EPSO to all Global Plant Council members to join in the Fascination of Plants Day on 20 December 2011.

To help you organize and advertise great events on the FoPD, as well as to encourage more events from your city, region, country and way beyond, you can print the online flyer and 13 posters. In addition, you can use the graphic files to exchange the text (with your national language, coordinator and event) in the flyer and poster, and use your favourites among 13 images for the poster.

30.01.2012 | Welcome to Slovenia, the 32nd country joining the “Fascination of Plants Day”
The Slovanian member cluster to EPSO decided to join the FoPD also in Slovenia. Marusa Pompe-Novak, the EPSO representative from Slovenia and Head of the Infrastructural Center National Institute of Biology, Ljubljana, said 'the activity in Slovenia will be run by the Slovenian Society of Plant Biology in collaboration with the Slovenian Botanical Society, Botanical Garden at the University of Ljubljana and the Slovenian publishing house Mladinska knjiga that is publishing the journal Pil.’

The European Technology Platform “Plants for the Future” (Plant ETP) decided to sponsor the Fascination of Plants Day. The decision followed an invitation by Karin Metzlaff (EPSO) and was taken at Plant ETP Executive Committee meeting last Friday, 20 January 2012. Plant ETP is a European Partnership for research, development and innovation, bringing together industries, farming communities and academia in the plant sector www.plantetp.org

‘Indian scientists will join the Fascination of Plants Day initiative’ Neera Bhalla Sarin, Dean School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehry University New Delhi - informed Karin Metzlaff and Jan Kellmann. This follows the invitation of EPSO to Indian scientists discussed aside a Europe-India partnership initiative (SAHYOG) kick-off meeting in Brussels on 12-13 January 2012.

13.01.2012 | Welcome to China, the 31st country joining the "Fascination of Plants Day"
Chinese scientists now confirmed to join the FoPD: ‘Peng Zhang, will be our FoPD coordinator and we will organize several activities on "Plant Sciences and Better life" in some big cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Hangzhou.’, Zuhua He, Director of the Chinese Society of Plant Biology (CSPB) told Karin Metzlaff from EPSO. ‘Dr. Zhang, with a team, will coordinate the activities, and our CSPB office will provide all help.’ This follows the first confirmation from CSPB in December last year to support the FoPD.

Plant Canada supports the Fascination of Plants Day initiative, President Shahrokh Khanizadeh informed Karin Metzlaff. Shahrokh is the national FoPD coordinator and already invited all Plant Canada Board members to inform their society Boards and members and encourage them to participate – or get involved in organizing this event. This follows the invitation of EPSO to all Global Plant Council members to join in the Fascination of Plants Day on 20 December 2011.

22.12.2011 | Australia prepares YouTube Competition for the "Fascination of Plants Day"
The Australian Center for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) decided to start a national YouTube competition for the Fascination of Plants Day. Monica Ogierman, national coordinator for FoPD in Australia, said ‘ACPFG has committed 3000 Australian Dollar for prices already and more Australian sponsors are welcome. More countries are encouraged to follow this example and start national FoPD YouTube competitions as well.

The Chinese Society of Plant Biology (CSPB) supports the Fascination of Plants Day initiative, Secretary Bing Leng and Executive Director Zuhua He, informed Karin Metzlaff. Following a meeting of Nihan ERYILMAZ from The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and Karin Metzlaff from EPSO, on 16 November 2011 in Brussels, scientists in Turkey decided to join the Fascination of Plants Day with Hikmet Budak from Sabanci University as national FoPD coordinator.

26.10.2011 | Over 25 Countries are on board of the first "Fascination of Plants Day"
The "Fascination of Plants Day" has been already adopted by more than 25 countries worldwide and the number is growing. The initiative, launched by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO), is supported by a network of national coordinators who volunteer their time to promote and disseminate the activity within their countries. More than 60 scientific institutions, universities, botanical gardens, and museums have already announced that they will open their doors.

The European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO) decides to launch a very first, concerted, and international "Plant Day" appreciating the key role plants have on this plant for any kind of life - including mankind
At their annual General Meeting in Paris the members of EPSO decided concordantly to support and organize the initiative called "Fascination of Plants Day", as a result of an international workshop on outreach activities taking place at the EPSO Congress in Olos, Lapland, in August 2010.
